Dimmer controls on your lighting fixtures offer a number of benefits. Not only can they help you conserve energy and reduce your power bills, they provide you with total control over how much illumination your home has at any given time.

This helps you ensure you have the perfect lighting for any activity, from throwing a dinner party to curling up on the couch with a good book.

However, not all dimmer switches are created equal.

Different Dimmer Controls
Toggle dimmers feature a small slider next to the toggle switch that allows you to vary the intensity of lighting.

Another option is a touch dimmer, which allows you to change the lighting by pressing a button. These systems also give you the chance to recall the previous lighting level through one touch, as opposed to moving a slider up and down.

Meanwhile, an integrated dimming system provides the opportunity to create multiple preset lighting levels within a given room. These can be changed from the press of a button or through a wireless remote control. Some systems can even be controlled by a smartphone.

Determining which one works best for you will likely come down to personal taste and how much you're willing to spend.
